What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a simple, non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people from 18 to 65 years of age. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
One 10-minute treatment—a few tiny injections—and within days there's a noticeable improvement in those persistent lines between the brows, which can last up to 4 months. Results may vary.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein, which reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those frown lines between the brows to form over time.
WHY TRY BOTOX® Cosmetic?
When it comes to selecting a physician-administered cosmetic treatment, chances are you’ll want proof, not just claims. The proof for BOTOX® Cosmetic is in the numbers.
In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women surveyed rated the improvement in the appearance of frown lines between their brows as moderate to better 1 month after treatment. Results vary.
Results can last for up to 4 months, and may vary.
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used to treat a million people in the United States since it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 for the temporary treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery ranked BOTOX® Cosmetic as the most popular of all physician-administered cosmetic procedures (surgical and nonsurgical combined) in 2002 and 2003.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is the only treatment of its type approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. What's more, unlike many procedures and over-the-counter wrinkle remedies, BOTOX® Cosmetic treats the cause of these frown lines by reducing the muscle contractions that cause the lines to form over time.
You may see creams or gels advertised, or products that claim to be "better than BOTOX." However, none of these products is associated with BOTOX® Cosmetic. The fact is, there is only one BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Mode of Action
The only approved treatment to target the source of hyperfunctional glabellar lines1
Mode of Action Highlights
At a normal neuromuscular junction, a nerve impulse triggers the release of acetylcholine, which causes the muscles to contract.
Excessive release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction causes overactive contraction of corrugator and procerus muscles, which over time can cause glabellar lines to form.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is effective in reducing this excessive activity. As it enters the nerve ending
. . .BOTOX® Cosmetic blocks the release of acetylcholine, reducing the activity of overactive corrugator and procerus muscles.1
Treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic for cosmetic purposes may result in the formation of antibodies that may reduce the effectiveness of subsequent treatments with BOTOX® Cosmetic for glabellar lines or BOTOX® for other indications. However, the potential for antibody formation may be minimized by injecting with the lowest effective dose given with the longest feasible intervals between injections.
