Lip Fillers

The most expressed concern by someone looking to get lip injections for the first time is that they are afraid their lips will look “overdone” and “duck-like.” There is an art to lip enhancement which is why choosing an injector that is a good fit for you is important. There is not a lot of skill required to simply “plump lips” or to add huge amounts of volume to the lips. Dr. Tsay and our injectors at Ageless MD take pride in focusing on shape, proportions, and anatomy rather than simply plumping.

Dr. Tsay is a master injector, and his personally trained staff understand the art of lip enhancements as well as the complex anatomy of the lips and surrounding area such as the vermillion border, oral commissures, philtrum, and cupid’s bow.

The lips are one of the defining features of the face, and full lips are not only more desirable, but can be rejuvenating as well. As we age, the lips tend to lose volume. In addition, the distance from the bottom of the base of the nose to the middle of the cupid’s bow lengthens. Fortunately, a natural lip enhancement by your Ageless MD injector can enhance and optimize these proportions to help return the lips to a more youthful state without looking “fake” or unnatural. Even those pesky “smoker’s lines” (you do not have to be a smoker to have these lines) can be improved with Botox or Dysport to block your mouth’s ability to purse your lips and/or fillers if the lines are seen when your mouth is at rest and you are not pursing your lips.

Prior to injection, we apply a very potent topical numbing cream that will help reduce the pain during the procedure. For those that cannot handle pain, we offer a dental block to make the pain essentially painless. Prior to injecting, the topical numbing is removed and the lips are disinfected using alcohol or another antiseptic. After lip filler injections, there is moderate swelling of approximately 10% and most likely bruising–80-90% of lip fillers clients bruise. If you are prone to frequent cold sores, please let the staff know at the time of booking so that we can prescribe you an antiviral medication to reduce the chances of a cold sore breakout which can be triggered by lip injections.

Choosing Your Lip Filler

How does one decide which filler to use since there are so many kinds and not all of them are suitable for your needs? Any of the hyaluronic acid fillers can be injected into the lips. Our Ageless MD favorites for fillers that give a luscious, full, and enhanced effect are Restylane Kysse and Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC. Restylane Refyne or Defyne can also be used because of the “stretchable” characteristic of these two fillers.

For those that are used to having multiple syringes in their lips, one can layer different types of the fillers such as Juvéderm Voluma XC in a deeper plane to give structural support or a stronger foundation; afterwards, Juvéderm Ultra XC, Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC, Restylane Kysse, Restylane Silk, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne, or Revanesse Versa Lips+ can be injected superficially. Most of the lip fillers last between 6-9 months on average and up to 11-12 months. Everyone’s body is different and breaks down the filler at varying rates. Fillers like Juvéderm Voluma XC that belong in the Vycross family of fillers from Allergan can last up to 1 year and sometimes longer.

Lips are a substantial part of the practice at Ageless MD, so let us give you the lips of your dreams and maintain them for years to come.
