Lip Fillers

The lips deserve a section of its own. The most often expressed concern by someone looking to get lip injections for the first time is that they are afraid their lips will look “overdone” and “duckie.” There is an art to lip enhancement which is why choosing an injector that is a good fit for you important. There is not a lot of skill required to simply “plump lips” or to add huge amounts of volume to the lips. Dr. Tsay and his injectors at Ageless MD take pride in focusing on shape, proportions, and anatomy rather than simply plumping.

Dr. TJ Tsay is a master injector, and his personally trained staff understand the art of lip enhancements as well as the complex anatomy that goes along with the lips and surrounding area such as the vermillion border, oral commissures, philtrum, and cupids bow. The body of the lips is the painting and everything around it is the frame, which is just as important as the painting itself.

The lips are one of defining features of the face, and full lips are not only more desirable, but can be rejuvenating as well. As we age, the lips tend to lose volume. In addition, the distance from the bottom of the base of the nose to the middle of the cupids bow lengthens. Fortunately, a natural lip enhancement by enhancing and optimizing these proportions the injector can help to return the lips to a more youthful state without looking ‘fake’ or unnatural. Even the pesky “smokers lines” (you don’t have to be a smoker to have these likes) can be improved with botox to block your mouths ability to purse your lips, and/or fillers if the lines are seen not just with movement but even when your mouth is at rest and you are not pursing your lips. Some people need just one or the other, and some people need both.

Prior to injection we apply a very potent topical cream that will help reduce the pain during the procedure. For those that truly cannot handle any type of pain, we can offer a dental block to help make the pain basically painless. Afterwards there is moderate swelling approx 10% and most likely bruising-80-90% of lip fillers do bruise. If you are prone to frequent cold sores please let the staff know and we can prescribe you an antiviral medication to reduce the chances of a cold sore breakout which can happen with lip injections.

How does one decide which filler to use since there are so many kinds and not all of them are suitable for your needs. For those wanting the most subtle enhancement, Juvederm Volbella does not cause water retention and will not give too much of a “plump” effect. Any of the hyaluronic acid fillers can be injected into the lips, but for a luscious full and enhanced effect one would want to choose Juvederm Ultra or Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. Restylane Refyne or Defyne can also be used because of the “stretchable” characteristic of these 2 fillers. For those that are used to having multiple syringes in their lips, one can layer different types of the fillers such as Juvederm Voluma/ Juvederm Vollure in a deeper plane to give structural support or a stronger foundation, and then Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, Juvederm Volbella, Restylane Silk, or Restylane Refyne more superficially. Most of the lip fillers last between 6-9 months on average. Everyone’s body is different and breaks down the filler at varying rates. Some fillers such as Juvederm Voluma/Vollure/Volbella that belong he the Vycross family of fillers from Allergan can last up to 1 year and sometimes longer.
