What is Phentermine?
Phentermine is a medication that can be used for weight loss by suppressing appetite and can be used in combination with diet, exercise, and/or our semaglutide weight loss program. At Ageless MD, we will have you consult with the provider so that they can review your medical history to ensure that you are a good candidate as phentermine is a scheduled medication in which there is potential for misuse.
How Does Phentermine Work?
Phentermine is an oral medication that works as a stimulant to suppress appetite in which people eat less, thereby consuming less calories which results in weight loss. The medication is dispensed at a dose of 37.5 mg and should be taken in the morning. When first starting phentermine, it is best to take half the regular dose so that your body can be gradually accustomed to the effects. Phentermine should only be for short-term use only and taken as prescribed.
What are the Contraindications / Precautions?
Individuals who should not take phentermine include those with heart disease (i.e., heart failure, coronary artery disease, abnormal heart rhythms, history of stroke, etc.), uncontrolled hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, anxiety, history of drug misuse, history of abnormal EKGs, allergies to similar stimulant medications along with those who are over the age of 75 years old, pregnant, or breastfeeding. To ensure your safety, please inform the provider if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney disease.
What are the Side Effects?
Common side effects of phentermine include but are not limited to feeling restless, jitteriness, difficulty sleeping, fast heartbeat or palpitations, headache, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, higher blood pressure, and libido changes. Rare, but serious, side effects may include shortness of breath, chest pain, swelling in the ankles or feet, changes in mood or behavior, severe headache, and blurry vision.
There may be more side effects than those listed; please let your provider know if you experience any side effects, and if you have severe side effects, seek immediate care.
