Vampire Facelift® – Natural Facial Rejuvenation
The Vampire Facelift® is a procedure developed for people who want healthy, youthful, and rejuvenated skin, but done naturally and without surgery. This procedure is able to do this by harnessing your own body’s healing and regenerative properties. The Vampire Facelift® is an outpatient procedure, and results can be experienced on the same day, with continual benefit of skin regeneration lasting for months—even a year—after the procedure.
The Vampire Facelift® is actually not a surgical facelift at all, but rather a type of skin treatment using the body’s own natural healing and growth factors that are derived from your own blood (hence the name The Vampire Facelift®), combined with a hyaluronic acid dermal filler. The procedure is a near painless series of injections into strategic areas of the face to reduce wrinkles, add youthful volume, and improve the quality of your skin.
What is a Vampire Facelift?
The Vampire Facelift® is a “designer procedure” developed as a way to enhance volume in the face using a combination of hyaluronic acid (such as Juvederm product) and platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM), which is a thicker form of platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
The key ingredient of the Vampire Facelift® is platelet-rich fibrin matrix, which is derived from the patient’s own blood before being mixed with other factors. Platelet-rich fibrin matrix starts with a blood draw, just like any normal blood test.
The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then separated by spinning the patient’s blood through a centrifuge. Platelet-rich plasma appears as a yellow/pinkish serum after it is separated from the darker components made mostly of red blood cells.
Calcium chloride (CaCl) or another activator is added to the PRP to turn it into the thicker and longer lasting platelet-rich fibrin matrix. Platelet-rich plasma is used in the medical field for its wound and injury healing properties. It also stimulates the production of collagen and for tissue regeneration.
These properties makes platelet-rich fibrin matrix an ideal natural serum for rejuvenating facial skin quality and volume with increased collagen production, blood supply, and new skin and fatty tissue generation, creating that youthful appearance that comes with healthier skin.
Candidates for The Vampire Facelift
The Vampire Facelift® is not for everyone. People with more advanced signs of aging may benefit more from surgical treatment and/or Botox applications.
People with less visible signs of aging may benefit from using less extensive non-surgical procedures like hyaluronic acid fillers and platelet-rich plasma alone. A personal consultation with highly reviewed expert injector Dr. TJ Tsay is the best way to determine if The Vampire Facelift® is right for you.
Areas treated by the Vampire Facelift®:
- Lines at corners of the mouth
- Crepe skin/fine lines around eyes and lower eyelid
- Dark Circles underneath eyes
- Frown lines
- Smile lines
- Plumping of the cheeks
A Leading Practitioner of The Vampire Facelift
The procedure was made famous by Kim Kardashian, who underwent a procedure called “The Vampire Facial” in 2013 (referring to it as a “blood facial”). When The Vampire Facelift® or the Vampire Facial is done properly, the patient will not experience any significant pain or have much blood on their face, unlike Kim Kardashian’s much publicized experience with the procedure.
Don’t be misled by providers that offer The Vampire Facelift who are not listed as official providers for the procedure. One must compare apples to apples and many places that claim to offer this procedure do not follow Dr. Runel’s protocol and hence are not offering the same service/product to their clients.
How the Vampire Facelift® Helps You Look Younger?
The face ages in two ways:
- There is loss of volume from bone, muscle, fat, and skin. This can make the under eye area and cheeks look flat and hollow. The skin can look dull or gray instead of being rosy as it was when younger.
- The loss of support of the skin results in drooping upper eyelids, lower eyelids, cheeks , jowls and sagging neck skin (“turkey neck”).
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers for Adding Youthful Volume
The first step of The Vampire Facelift® is the application of an injectable hyaluronic acid dermal filler like Juvederm. One of the two main components of the facial aging process is the loss of volume due to a reduction of facial bone, muscle and fat in an area known as “the apples of the cheeks.”
Dermal fillers add youthful volume to the face, while keeping a natural appearance. Hyaluronic acid fillers do not paralyze facial muscles like Botox, so volume is added without inhibiting facial movement or expressions. There is an art to the application of fillers for a natural and youthful appearance, and you can be confident that Dr. Tsay will apply his natural artistic abilities, technical skills and 19 years worth of experience as a physician to perform your procedure in the best possible way.
Rejuvenating Facial Skin from Within
The platelet-rich fibrin matrix is placed after a numbing cream has been applied, resulting in a near painless application. Platelet-rich fibrin matrix contains at least eight of the body’s own concentrated growth factors to rejuvenate the face in several ways:
- Increases the formation of new blood vessels (also called “neovascularization”) and increases the blood flow to the skin, resulting in healthier, better-quality skin.
- Increases new cell formation for skin renewal.
- Spurs the production of new collagen, the major component of facial skin that diminishes in facial aging.
- Activates the multi-potent stem cells already in the skin by tricking it into thinking there is an injury, resulting in the use of a combination of growth factors and stem cells to generate new fatty tissue. The new fatty tissue repairs skin that was never injured in the first place, resulting in the generation of new, younger-skin.
A quick procedure that keeps working for several months
The Vampire Facelift procedure only takes about an hour to complete, and that includes the: blood draw, preparation of the PRP, platelet-rich fibrin matrix, and The Vampire Facelift® treatment itself. Since skin renewal and rejuvenation is using the body’s own active regeneration components, facial skin renewal is continual for about 3 months after the procedure. The overall effects of the Vampire Facelift® can last for over a year.
The Vampire Facelift® on Smokers
Cigarette smoke interferes with the body’s growth factors and with tissue healing and regeneration. If you do smoke, The Vampire Facelift® will not produce the same results as it would in a non-smoker. Smokers may be better off with hyaluronic acid filler application such as Juvederm rather than using platelet-rich fibrin matrix.
The Vampire Facelift® can be done in conjunction with wrinkle treatments such as Botox or Dysport. Dr. Tsay can help you determine what complementary procedures are right for your individual case, and develop a treatment plan that you are comfortable with.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Does this have anything to do with stem cells?
The growth factors activate your own adult stem cells in and under the skin. This stem cell activity results in:
- Skin quality improvement
- Improved blood flow and blood supply
- New collagen
- New tissue
How is the procedure done?
The key ingredient for the Vampire Facelift® is the platelet-rich fibrin matrix, which is derived from the patient’s own blood before being mixed with other factors. These properties make platelet-rich fibrin matrix an ideal natural serum for rejuvenating facial skin quality, as it increases collagen production, increases blood supply, and triggers new skin and fatty tissue generation, thus creating the youthful appearance that comes with generating new, healthier skin in a safe and natural way.
- A small amount of blood is collected from the patient’s arm.
- The platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is separated by spinning the patient’s blood through a centrifuge.
- The PRP is combined with a filler to create the longer lasting platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM).
- A topical cream is applied on the patient face for numbness.
- After 30 minutes the gel is injected in different areas of the face.
How do you get my blood?
A medical staff member takes your blood like a normal blood test. The blood is processed so the platelets (cells which stimulate collagen for healing) are separated from the red blood cells. The separated material is platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
How soon after the Vampire Facelift® can I go back to work?
The procedure has been called a “lunchtime lift” because recovery is typically minimal. You can expect some redness and minimal bruising.
How long does the Vampire Facelift® last?
The renewal effects of the procedure continues for the first few months. Depending on the individual’s response, the effects can last for over a year. Some people may need to have the procedure repeated once or twice a year depending on how much volume loss they are experiencing or Dr. Tsay can help with follow up visits to evaluate your results and customize your plan.
Difference between a Vampire Facelift® and a Regular Facelift
Many people coming to our practice choose the Vampire Facelift® because it’s a non-surgical procedure. The term “facelift” when used in the context of the “Vampire Facelift®” describes how volume placed artistically and strategically under the skin can “lift” the skin away from the bony structure creating a more youthful appearance. As people get older, the fat under the skin decreases making the person look more hollow.
An actual “facelift” is a surgical procedure to reposition sagging cheeks and skin to improve the face, jawline and neck. At Ageless MD we also work with the best surgeons that can perform a full facelift it is determined that this is a better option for the client.
Vampire Facelift® or Vampire Facial® ?
In contrast to the Vampire Facelift®, the Vampire Facial® does not use any fillers. The purpose of the Vampire Facial® is to enhance the benefits of micro-needling, by applying PRP (platelet-rich plasma) during and after the micro needling process. Dr. TJ Tsay customizes the depth and the rate at which the micro-needling is done in order to get the most benefit from the treatment for each patient. The combination of micro-needling with application of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) results in the stimulation of collagen and improvement of the skin. The result is a more radiant, tighter skin with increased collagen, smaller pore size, and improved elasticity. Often times the two procedures are done together in order to obtain the best results.
Vampire Facelift® or Synthetic Fillers
Unlike other injectables such as Bellafil or Radiesse, the Vampire Facelift® is natural since it uses the patient’s own healing and growth factors, collected from their blood, in combination with hyaluronic acid filler to revitalize the face.
When it comes to wound-healing, there is a well documented synergistic benefit from using hyaluronic acid filler with platelet-rich plasma. Synthetic fillers alone have not shown this benefit and have other risks, which make hyaluronic acid a preferred filler for the Vampire Facelift®.
Botox is different than dermal fillers as it is a neurotoxin which decreases muscle activity by affecting nerves which stimulate a particular muscle.
Is the Vampire Facelift® considered a “liquid facelift”?
The term “liquid facelift” was used to describe the use of several different types of injectables to enhance a person’s appearance. This means that the Vampire Facelift® is a type of “liquid facelift.” Various type of fillers can be use to get some of the effect of a facelift, from Botox to using your own fat (referred to as fat transfer or fat grafting). Sculptra Aesthetic is another type of filler made of Poly L Lactic Acid that is used to trick your body to make its own collagen and may be another alternative to the Vampire Facelift (See Sculptra under Dermal fillers). Depending on your personal situation, a liquid facelift might be a better option than a surgical facelift, which you can still consider in the future. Another option of achieving a facelift is using the PDO MINT threads of non-invasive threadlift using absorbable threads—See MINT threadlift section.
